Frequently asked questions

When and where is the 2026 total eclipse in Spain?

On 12 August 2026, near sunset. The path of totality crosses northern and eastern Spain — from Galicia and Asturias across Castilla y León, Aragón, the Valencia coast and the Balearics. Maximum is around 20:29 CEST.

Do I need special eclipse glasses?

Yes. ISO 12312-2 certified solar glasses are mandatory during all the partial phases. You may only remove them during the brief total phase, and only if you are inside the path of totality.

Why does a clear horizon matter so much?

The eclipse happens with the Sun very low — only about 2–12° above the horizon. A hill, trees or a building to the west-northwest can hide totality entirely, so where you stand is decisive.

How long does totality last?

Up to about two minutes near the centre of the path; many Spanish cities get roughly 1–2 minutes. Use the calculator for the exact seconds at your spot.
